• What does SATA mean?
SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) was announced in 2000 to replace the older, bulky ribbon cables of PATA (IDE) drives. It provided reduced cable size, allowed "hot swapping" (unplugging without turning off the PC), and drastically faster data transfer rates.

• What is the difference between an HDD and an SSD?
A traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) uses a physical, spinning magnetic platter and a moving mechanical arm to read and write data. A Solid-State Drive (SSD) uses flash memory chips with absolutely no moving parts! Because there is no mechanical arm to wait for, SSDs are incredibly fast, silent, and much less prone to physical damage.

• Why did SSDs take so long to become popular?
The basis for flash-based memory was actually invented in 1980! However, the manufacturing costs were astronomically high for decades. It wasn't until the 2010s that production techniques improved enough to make SSDs affordable for regular consumers.
