Did You Know?

Why are file extensions so important? They act as a secret handshake between the file and your operating system. Without the extension (like .JPG or .EXE), the computer doesn't know what program to use to open the file! This is why extensions should ideally never be hidden by default by the operating system—knowing the extension helps you avoid accidentally running a dangerous program disguised as a simple text document.

How to play File Types Tree

There are 18 stylized pictures representing different types of files, identified by their extensions in capital letters, at the top of the screen. Rolling over a picture reveals the common name of that file group. Each pictograph is grouped into a specific colour set, signifying its type category. The main knowledge tree is in the middle, featuring empty sockets coloured to match the groups. Drag the small round picture and drop it over the appropriate colour on the tree. The pictures will remain active until all are arranged correctly. A small counter helps evaluate your speed in fun classes, but take your time—completing the puzzle will reward you with a Knowledge Level!

Questions and Answers: Exploring File Formats

• What defines document files?
Document files generally contain formatted text and images designed for reading or printing, common extensions being TXT, PDF, or DOC.

• What file extensions are images?
Common image files use extensions like JPG (great for photos), PNG (supports clear backgrounds), and GIF (supports basic animation).

• What files are audio files?
Audio files usually end in MP3 (compressed music) or WAV (uncompressed sound effects).

• How do I know I have downloaded a real movie file?
A real movie file will typically have a video extension like AVI, MPG, or MP4. If you download a "movie" that ends in .EXE, do not open it—it is likely a program, potentially malware!

• What files start games and programs?
Executable files, primarily ending in .EXE on Windows systems, are the files that actually launch the software.

• What file is the web page I'm looking at right now?
You are currently looking at an HTML (HyperText Markup Language) file!
