How to play World Iron Ore Production.

Here is the map of the world and 20 pickaxes on the top of the screen. Click on the locations of the map to see how much tonnes of iron ore that region produce per year. The ammount of the iron ore production will be added in the bottom counter and one pickaxe will be lost. The task is to collect 2 billion tonnes of iron ore per year, before you run out of pickaxes.

Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in colour from dark grey, bright yellow, or deep purple to rusty red. Iron metal has been used since ancient times, although copper alloys, which have lower melting temperatures, were used even earlier in human history. Pure iron is relatively soft, but is unobtainable by smelting because it is significantly hardened and strengthened by impurities, in particular carbon, from the smelting process. Crude iron metal is produced in blast furnaces, where ore is reduced by coke to pig iron, which has a high carbon content. Further refinement with oxygen reduces the carbon content to the correct proportion to make steel. Steels and iron alloys formed with other metals are by far the most common industrial metals because they have a great range of desirable properties and iron-bearing rock is abundant.
