The United States Dollar ($) is the official currency of the United States and one of the most widely used currencies in the world. It was created by the Coinage Act of 1792, which established the U.S. Mint and the dollar as the country’s standard unit of money.
U.S. banknotes are often called "greenbacks" because of their green color. Each denomination features portraits of important American leaders, such as George Washington on the $1 bill and Abraham Lincoln on the $5 bill. The reverse sides show national symbols, landmarks, or monuments.
Fun fact: The dollar sign ($) is believed to have evolved from the Spanish peso, which was widely used in the Americas before the U.S. dollar was introduced. Today, the dollar is not only America’s currency but also the world’s most common reserve currency.
