Class subject: Japonese Yen currency.

The Japanese yen (¥) is the official currency of Japan and one of the most traded currencies in the world. It was introduced in 1871 as part of the Meiji government’s effort to modernize Japan’s monetary system and replace the complex mix of old feudal currencies. The yen helped unify Japan’s economy and made trade much easier across the country.

Japanese banknotes feature important historical figures, such as Hideyo Noguchi on the ¥1,000 note and Fukuzawa Yukichi on the ¥10,000 note. The back sides often show famous landmarks, cultural symbols, or scenes from nature. Yen coins are also well known for their unique designs, including the ¥5 and ¥50 coins, which have holes in the center.

Fun fact: The ¥5 coin is considered a lucky charm in Japan because its pronunciation, “go-en,” sounds like the word for “good fortune” or “destiny.” Today, the yen remains a key currency in global finance and a symbol of Japan’s rich history and culture.
