What is the Earth's Structure?
The interior structure of the Earth is layered in distinct spherical shells: an outer silicate solid crust, a highly viscous asthenosphere and mantle, a liquid outer core that generates the magnetic field, and a solid inner core of pure iron and nickel. Scientific understanding of the Earth's depths is based on observing seismic waves, volcanic activity, and the planet's gravitational and magnetic fields. Because we cannot dig entirely through the Earth, these deductive methods are vital for geologists.
