Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe (1519–1522) under the Spanish crown. Although he was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his fleet continued the journey, proving that the world was round and much larger than previously thought. Magellan also discovered the Strait of Magellan, a crucial navigational route at the southern tip of South America. His expedition provided key insights into global geography and trade, shaping the Age of Exploration.
