Class subject: Julius Caesar.

Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE) was a Roman general, politician, and dictator who played a critical role in the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Known for his military genius, he expanded Rome’s territory, particularly through his conquest of Gaul (modern-day France and Belgium).

Caesar’s rise to power led to conflicts with other Roman leaders, culminating in a civil war. In 49 BCE, he famously crossed the Rubicon River, signaling the start of the war against his rival, Pompey. After defeating Pompey, he became dictator and enacted various reforms.

In 44 BCE, Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators, including some of his close allies, fearing he was becoming too powerful. His death paved the way for the end of the Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire under Augustus.
