Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States (1969–1974), is remembered for both significant achievements in foreign policy and the scandal that led to his resignation. Nixon pursued a policy of détente with the Soviet Union and China, becoming the first U.S. president to visit China in 1972, which opened diplomatic relations and shifted the global balance of power. His administration also negotiated the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) with the USSR and ended U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War with the Paris Peace Accords. Domestically, Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and advanced initiatives in healthcare and welfare reform. However, his presidency unraveled due to the Watergate scandal, a political espionage and cover-up that led to his resignation in 1974, making him the only U.S. president to resign from office.
