Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer and cartographer who played a key role in recognizing that the lands discovered by European explorers were part of a new continent, not Asia. Between 1497 and 1504, he undertook several voyages to the New World, mapping parts of South America. His detailed letters about these lands helped shape European understanding of the Americas, leading to the continents being named after him in 1507. Vespucci later served as Chief Navigator for Spain, aiding in maritime exploration until his death in 1512.
