About the Administrative Divisions: The States of Saudi Arabia, officially known as the Emirates of the States of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (or simply Regions), are the 13 first-level administrative divisions of the Kingdom. Each emirate is governed by an Emir (Provincial Governor), who is appointed by the King. The emir is given the rank of minister and is assisted by a deputy emir.
Geographical Insight: The population of Saudi Arabia is unevenly distributed. A significant majority of the population lives in the three largest and most populous regions: Riyadh, Mecca, and the Eastern Province. In contrast, the vast desert regions in the north and south are sparsely populated.
