Netherlands Map Puzzle: Geography Game

The Netherlands Puzzle is a free educational map game designed to help you memorise the 12 provinces of the Netherlands. Test your geographical knowledge in this interactive drag-and-drop exercise! It is an excellent "Minute to win it" tool for online lessons, interactive European geography classes, and exciting homework assignments.

Administrative Divisions of the Netherlands

The Netherlands is divided into twelve distinct provinces, each governed under a King's Commissioner (Commissaris van de Koning). Informally, in the province of Limburg, this position is referred to as the Governor (Gouverneur). These provinces are further divided into municipalities (gemeenten), numbering over 340 today.

Fascinatingly, the country is also subdivided into 21 regional water districts, governed by a water board (waterschap or hoogheemraadschap). Because so much of the Netherlands is below sea level, these water boards have immense authority in water management. The creation of these boards actually pre-dates the nation itself, with the first appearing around 1196. Dutch water boards are among the oldest democratic entities in the world still in existence!

How to play Netherlands Puzzle

At the start of the game, 12 puzzle pieces representing the first-level administrative regions of the Netherlands will appear on the left side of the screen. Drag and drop them into the correct place within the outlined borders of the country map on the right. When a province is placed correctly, the image will display the official flag of that province! The game is completed when all 12 provinces are firmly in place.

Did you know?

• Man-Made Land: The province of Flevoland was established in 1986. Almost the entire province was created through land reclamation from the Zuiderzee, making it the largest artificial island in the world!

• Holland vs. The Netherlands: "Holland" strictly refers only to the two provinces of North Holland and South Holland. Calling the entire country "Holland" is common but geographically incorrect.

• The "Mountain": The Netherlands is famously flat. Its highest point on the European mainland is the Vaalserberg, located in the province of Limburg, standing at just 322.4 metres (1,058 ft) above sea level.
