Biggest Cities Puzzle: Geography Learning Game
The Metropolitan Regions Puzzle is an interactive educational map game designed to help you memorise the locations of the world's 22 largest cities by population. Free to play online, this drag-and-drop exercise is an excellent "Minute to win it" tool for geography classes, remote learning, and testing your general urban knowledge.
Understanding Megacities
The United Nations uses three distinct definitions for what constitutes a "city", as jurisdictions classify urban spaces differently worldwide. Cities can be defined by their strict administrative city proper boundaries, their continuous built-up urban area, or their broader metropolitan region.
A metropolitan area is a loose term encompassing a dense urban core alongside its primary commuter zones and surrounding suburbs. In many countries, these massive hubs drive the global economy. By studying the largest metropolitan populations, we can better understand global demographics, economic powerhouses, and human migration patterns.
How to play Metropolitan Regions Puzzle
At the top of the screen, you will find 22 puzzle pieces, each representing one of the largest metropolitan regions by population (based on 2020 data). Your task is to drag and drop these cities onto their correctly coloured locations on the blank world map at the bottom of the screen. Look closely at the numbers—a smaller number indicates a larger population rank! If a city is placed incorrectly, it will snap back to the starting tray.
