Baba Martha is a mythical character in Bulgarian folklore. In folk beliefs, presented in proverbs and tales, the name is related to the name of March. With Baba Martha and March, many customs and holidays are celebrated, dedicated to the coming spring. The most famous custom associated with Baba Martha is to hang people and young animals with Martenitsi (twisted white and red thread) on March 1, the day of Baba Martha's arrival. Martenitsata is a small ornate accessory made of red and white cloth, worn from March 1st until the end of March. Or until a stork, a swallow or a blooming tree is seen.
